Ukrainian parliament to discuss banning “propaganda of Communist ideology”

The party of Ukrainian Prime Minister Yatseniuk, Popular Front, has introduced a draft law on the “banning the propaganda of Communist ideology in Ukraine” – the draft has been introduced on December 18 by the head of the Popular Front parliamentary group Turchynov together with party deputies Sergei Pashinsky and Victoria Syumar. The draft (1222-1) is very similar to another proposal introduced on December 3rd by deputies from the far right Svoboda party “On the prohibition of communist ideology in Ukraine” (1222).

The prohibition of Communist ideology was part of the coalition agreement which gave rise to the current government of Petro Poroshenko. The document talks of banning any “communist, Nazi, fascist and anti-Ukrainian propaganda” and agrees to the goal of “completing the process of de-communistisation of all spheres of Ukraine’s public life.”
