“They lost their lives because they defended men and women, children and the elderly who found themselves in a situation facing a threat to be killed by invaders and sponsored by them subhumans. First, we will commemorate the heroes by wiping out those who killed them and then by cleaning our land from the evil”
Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yatsenyuk promised to “commemorate the heroes … by cleaning our land from the evil” and then went to refer to the rebels in the East as “invaders and sponsored by them subhumans.” The word, which is the same as the German “Untermensch” (sub-human) used by the Nazis to describe “inferior people” which could be eliminated. His comments created an uproar and the word was replaced by “inhuman” in the official website of the Ukrainian embassy in the US. However, a simple search at the archive.org website shows that the subhuman word was published on June 15.
